Louisiana Joins States Advocating for U.S. Space Academy Location

Louisiana Competes to Host U.S. Space Academy

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Michael Hecht, head of GNO Inc., recently met with NASA’s administrator, Jared Isaacman, to discuss Louisiana’s bid for the proposed U.S. Space Academy.

Hecht praised Isaacman, noting his impressive background as an astronaut, fighter pilot, and entrepreneur. “He’s the real deal,” Hecht remarked.

In August, President Trump signed an executive order promoting the Space Academy’s establishment. NASA has since issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input from interested states.

Hecht noted Isaacman’s enthusiasm for Louisiana’s potential, particularly in light of SpaceX’s plans to set up a massive rocket launch facility in Vermilion Parish.

During their conversation about the Academy, Isaacman indicated Louisiana’s strong position, highlighting its 60 years of experience in manned space flight.

However, Louisiana faces competition from other states. Hecht emphasized the advantages Louisiana holds, citing the Michoud facility, which has been integral to space missions, and the new SpaceX facility.

Additionally, the corridor connecting SpaceX, Michoud, and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi enhances Louisiana’s attractiveness as a host site, supported by its educational institutions offering aerospace programs.

The next step involves submitting the RFI by the end of October. Hecht expressed hope for a formal proposal request following this submission, suggesting that decisions may be made by year-end.

If selected, LSU New Orleans could serve as the Space Academy’s location.
