Acoustics Core Named in Tribute to Watson College Professor

Ronald N. Miles Acoustics Core Dedicated at Binghamton University

A new lab dedicated to the study of sound and vibration has been established at Binghamton University, thanks to a generous gift from two alumni. Named the Ronald N. Miles Acoustics Core, the lab honors the university’s distinguished professor Ronald Miles, whose groundbreaking research spans mechanics, acoustics, vibrations, micromechanical systems, neurobiology, and control systems.

Innovation in Acoustics

The endowed facility, located in the Engineering and Science Building at the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, features an advanced anechoic chamber designed to isolate external sound and vibrations. This unique environment positions Binghamton University at the forefront of acoustics research, enabling diverse studies in the field.

Legacy and Impact

Dr. Yanchu Xu, PhD ’94, and Jianhua Wu, MS ’95, have contributed to this initiative, which will fund ongoing research in the Acoustics Core. Both alumni credit Miles with shaping their academic and professional paths, particularly highlighting their shared research on how insects perceive sound, which has influenced the development of microacoustic sensing technologies.

“I never imagined our research would lead to advancements in hearing technology,” Xu reflected, emphasizing the significance of fundamental research in driving innovation.

Recognition and Mentorship

During the dedication ceremony, Professor Miles acknowledged the profound impact of his students, citing the importance of mentorship and the opportunities that education can provide. Watson College Dean Atul Kelkar expressed gratitude to the donors, stating that the new facility will not only offer world-class resources but also serve as a reminder of the enduring value of mentorship in shaping successful careers.

This initiative is poised to inspire future generations of engineers, emphasizing that the relationships formed in academic settings can significantly influence professional journeys and contribute to meaningful advancements in technology.
