UCF Knights and the Space Game Tradition
Establishing lasting traditions in college football has become increasingly challenging, especially as coaching staffs change. However, the UCF Knights have managed to create a remarkable tradition known as the Space Game, which originated during their historic undefeated season in 2017.
Founded in 1963 as Florida Technical College to support the burgeoning U.S. space program, UCF has embraced its space heritage. Each year, for the Space Game, the Knights revert to their original moniker, the “Citronauts,” and wear uniquely designed, space-themed uniforms.
The 10th Space Game is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 30 against Baylor, named “Mission X.” The highly anticipated uniforms were unveiled at precisely 3:21 p.m. on Sept. 29, just a month ahead of the game.
In this year’s incarnation, UCF will don all-white jerseys for the third time in the history of the Space Game, contrasting previous games where they wore black or Canaveral blue.
Fans will get their first live look at the Space Game uniforms during the matchup with Baylor, marking the first-ever meeting between the two teams in this themed contest. Historically, the Citronauts hold an impressive 8-1 record in the Space Game series, outscoring their opponents by an average of 48-21.
