‘Unmatched’: Academy of Natural Sciences closes its doors after nearly two centuries

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, a cherished institution in Philadelphia, has permanently closed due to financial challenges, leaving many like college sophomore Tais Millan mourning its loss. The Academy, known for its hands-on science exhibits, has played a significant role in educating children and fostering a love for science for nearly 200 years. Millan recalls her experiences, including close encounters with impressive specimens like the Tyrannosaurus in the dinosaur hall, designed by veterinary professor Peter Dodson.

Dodson and others, including Executive Director of the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, Anthony Fiorillo, emphasize the critical role the museum played in sparking curiosity about science and extinction among youth. Despite plans to retain the building for research, concerns remain about the future of its invaluable collections as the facility transitions into commercial real estate. The Academy’s closure prompted emotional responses from visitors and staff, highlighting its irreplaceable value to the community and scientific research.

As the museum’s leadership considers next steps, Drexel University has declined a funding offer from the William Penn Foundation to cover operating costs. This decision has raised concerns about the accessibility of the Academy’s collections moving forward.
