The 2026 International Forum on Chinese Automotive Industry Development recently featured a session on new energy vehicles (NEVs) and charging infrastructure. Yao Zhanhui, a chief expert from the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), emphasized the need for a diverse energy approach, advocating for pure electric drives while also integrating various localized solutions. He highlighted China’s ongoing initiatives, including rural charging programs and zero-carbon freight corridors, aiming to deploy 100,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2030.
However, Yao outlined four significant challenges facing the industry: a mismatch between energy supply and vehicle demand, the need for balanced policy support for various technologies, uneven policy backing for different paths, and the current lack of viable business models for hydrogen and methanol.
To navigate these challenges, he made three key recommendations: foster a broad-minded approach to technology reliance, develop an integrated energy infrastructure network, and leverage pilot projects to create scalable models for broader implementation.
