The upcoming documentary Musk by Alex Gibney, which explores the life of Elon Musk, is set to premiere in two weeks and has garnered praise following its debut at the Venice International Film Festival. However, its distributor, Bleecker Street, faces challenges promoting the film due to advertising rejections from major social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Meta, citing “political content” linked to the trailer.
Despite the trailer not being a political campaign itself, its references to the 2024 election have led to these platforms denying ad runs, particularly in line with their policies around political content. Bleecker Street has appealed these decisions, with varied responses; Meta has outright rejected the appeal, while YouTube and TikTok are still considering it.
Additionally, Universal Pictures, which is handling international distribution, had initial hesitations about the film’s release but has since reaffirmed its commitment to launch Musk in theaters worldwide. There have been comparisons made to the recent experiences of other films tackling controversial tech figures, such as Artificial and The Social Reckoning.
Musk is set to hit theaters on October 9.
