Vallejo police patrol car catches fire on Interstate 80 in Fairfield.

A Vallejo police vehicle caught fire on Interstate Highway 80 in Fairfield on Thursday. While driving westbound near the Abernathy Road exit, an officer noticed smoke emanating from the rear of the Ford Police Interceptor utility vehicle. Upon pulling over, the officer observed flames and managed to retrieve firearms and other items from inside the vehicle, but could not access the fire extinguisher.

The Fairfield Fire Department extinguished the fire, which completely engulfed the vehicle. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. Investigators determined that the blaze resulted from a failure in an electrical control module, which ignited road flares stored nearby. The Vallejo Police Department is currently reviewing the incident and the equipment failure.
