NJIT’s Sara Zapico Recognized as National Educator of the Year in Higher Education Forensic Science

Sara C. Zapico, a forensic scientist at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), has been honored as the 2026 Senator John Cornyn III National Higher Education Forensic Science Educator of the Year by the Consortium of Forensic Science Organizations (CFSO). This recognition highlights her impact on forensic science education.

Zapico received the award during a ceremony on September 25, held in Tiernan Hall, the site of NJIT’s forensic science labs, surrounded by students and colleagues. The award was presented by Britton Morin, director of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Forensic Science Laboratory.

This accolade is part of a new CFSO category aimed at honoring educators for their dedication, innovation, and leadership. Morin emphasized Zapico’s teaching philosophy, which emphasizes active student engagement, real-world connections to forensic investigations, and hands-on scientific practice.

Growing up in Spain with a passion for forensic science, Zapico faced challenges but ultimately pursued her dream, studying biology and biochemistry, followed by a career that includes research at the Smithsonian Institution. Since joining NJIT in 2021, she has led the ForenBioS Laboratory, advocating for student involvement in innovative research.

Zapico’s mentorship has significantly influenced her students’ careers, with many pursuing successful paths in forensic science. Her recent accolade follows her induction as a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors in June, a testament to her contributions to the field.

As she looks to the future, Zapico finds immense joy in her students’ growth and career advancements, viewing it as the most rewarding aspect of her role.
