NYK Enhances Offshore Wind Operations with New SOV Construction

Japanese shipping company NYK is enhancing its presence in the offshore wind power sector, which it sees as a significant growth opportunity. Recently, NYK ordered a new service operation vessel (SOV) to bolster its operations in the Asia-Pacific region. This 89-meter vessel, to be constructed by PaxOcean Group, will support the construction, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind farms, providing accommodations and logistical support for personnel.

The investment in offshore wind mirrors NYK’s broader strategy to expand its foothold in renewable energy. Last year, NYK entered the European market by investing in Northern Offshore Group, which operates over 60 offshore wind vessels. This move was intended to gather operational experience in anticipation of offshore wind developments closer to Japan.

The new SOV is designed to accommodate 120 personnel and features a dynamic positioning system that allows it to withstand external environmental forces. It incorporates advanced design elements for improved maneuverability and includes equipment for safe personnel and cargo transfer to wind turbines. Set for delivery in 2029, the vessel will operate in collaboration with Taiwan’s IOVTEC and Hsin Chien Marine.

NYK’s initiatives reflect its commitment to transitioning from traditional shipping to participating actively in the offshore wind value chain, thereby contributing to the industry’s growth in the Asia-Pacific region, where investments have recently surpassed $50 billion.
