York County Business Owner Turns Family Roots into Viral Bakery
The Food That Once Made Her Different Is Now Helping Manna Micro Bakery Stand Out
A viral TikTok video is bringing customers to Manna Micro Bakery in York, Pa. Owner Zaidy Luyando’s story, however, goes far beyond social media. Customers frequently line up at York Central Market, often waiting outside for a taste of the bakery’s popular offerings.
Zaidy’s journey began when her video on TikTok gained over half a million views, showcasing her delicious creations. Yet, the bakery’s success is deeply rooted in her family story. Zaidy’s parents immigrated from El Salvador during the civil war in the 1970s, arriving without knowing the language and striving to build a better life.
Watching her parents’ resilience instilled a strong work ethic and a sense of opportunity in Zaidy. Her mother’s determination became a role model for her, while her father continues to work in agriculture, and Zaidy aspires to help him retire.
Transitioning from a corporate career as a regional manager to entrepreneurship came after an unexpected layoff. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zaidy taught herself baking while caring for her daughter, and this passion led to the birth of Manna Micro Bakery.
Zaidy’s daughter remains one of her biggest inspirations, and building the bakery has allowed Zaidy to embrace her cultural heritage, something she initially felt embarrassed about as a child. She recalls feeling self-conscious when her grandmother would pack pupusas for her lunch instead of more common sandwiches.
Today, food represents family, heritage, and the sacrifices of her past. Zaidy emphasizes the importance of hard work and humility, understanding that being humble doesn’t mean being invisible.
As customers continue to flock to York Central Market, Manna Micro Bakery is not just about baked goods; it’s a heartfelt connection to Zaidy’s roots and the story of where she came from.
