2026 Election: Hatfield Residents to Vote on Open Space Measure

In Hatfield Township, voters will face a referendum on the upcoming ballot regarding a proposed increase in the earned income tax rate by up to 0.25%. This increase aims to generate funds for the preservation of open space. The formal question on the ballot asks whether voters favor this tax increase, which will be allocated for purposes such as acquiring undeveloped land, improving parks, and enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities.

The projected cost of the tax increase for residents is estimated to be $125 for those with a $50,000 salary, $250 for a $100,000 salary, and $375 for a $150,000 salary, potentially generating around $2 million annually. It’s important to note that the tax will only impact those who pay earned income tax and will not apply to residents on fixed incomes or sources like pensions and Social Security.

Funds raised from this tax cannot be used for eminent domain purchases; all acquisitions would be voluntary. The township plans to utilize an open space committee to oversee expenditures and ensure projects align with an established open space plan. If no properties are immediately available, the township may allocate up to 25% of annual revenue towards developing and maintaining existing open spaces.

Nearby municipalities, including Franconia and Lower Salford, have successfully enacted similar open space funding programs, which can help prevent developments that strain local services and infrastructure. The discussions surrounding the referendum were explored in detail during township commissioner meetings, available on their YouTube channel.
