Students Discover Sustainability and Cultural Insights in India – York College / City University of New York

York College students recently embarked on a transformative 10-day study abroad experience in India, emphasizing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Led by Health Science professor Dr. Efstathia Korkou, the program included three students: Segrid Scotto (Public Health), Sadeeq Nathanel (Psychology), and Igyeicy Barriola (Health Science).

The journey took them from the iconic Taj Mahal to the lush countryside of Maharashtra, where they participated in academic sessions, cultural excursions, and hands-on learning. The students also collaborated with peers from various CUNY colleges, enriching their experience through cross-institutional interactions.

Barriola expressed that a session on patient rights at KIMS University deepened her commitment to nursing, highlighting the importance of human decency. Nathanel shared insights on building connections with local students, despite language barriers, through games. Scotto echoed similar sentiments, noting that the sessions reaffirmed her advocacy for patients.

Professor Korkou described the trip as a “once-in-a-lifetime educational experience,” emphasizing its role in fostering a deeper appreciation for India’s diversity and sustainability practices outside the classroom.
