The Book Bird attributes its business growth to support from DeKalb County resources.

Small Business Opportunity Week in DeKalb County

DeKalb County is currently celebrating Small Business Opportunity Week, highlighting the support local entrepreneurs receive to enhance their businesses. The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the Decide DeKalb Development Authority are advocating for the use of available resources to help small businesses thrive.

The Book Bird’s Success Story

The Book Bird, co-owned by Brittany Smith and Amie Waltzer, has been in operation for three years. The duo credits county promotions and support from organizations with helping them connect to new customers and foster valuable relationships.

Brittany emphasizes the constant effort to innovate and attract customers, stating, “Turning over lots of events can have its challenges.” Amie recognizes that competing with larger companies’ pricing presents difficulties but sees a growing trend of community members choosing to support local businesses for the positive impact on their neighborhoods.

Community Support

Support from DeKalb County has been vital for The Book Bird, as county officials have promoted the business through various marketing materials and events. Geoffrey Loften, the equitable economic development program manager for Decide DeKalb, states, “What makes a community vibrant and gives it character is small business.” He believes that by amplifying these enterprises, the economic vitality of DeKalb County will improve.

Funding Opportunities

Small business owners are encouraged to leverage resources like the Decide DeKalb Small Business Revolving Loan Fund, which provides loans of up to $150,000 at a maximum interest rate of 5%. To qualify, businesses must be located in DeKalb County and have been operational for at least two years. More information about the loan program can be found on the Decide DeKalb Development Authority website.

Encouragement to Fellow Entrepreneurs

The co-owners of The Book Bird urge other entrepreneurs to utilize available support, sharing that, “There’s a lot of people out there that are willing to help, and sometimes you just have to ask.” Small Business Opportunity Week serves as a reminder of the valuable role small businesses play in the community.
