UMass Amherst’s Alexandra Pope Appointed Lead Scientist for New NASA Space Telescope

The recent advancements in space exploration are exemplified by the upcoming PRIMA mission, which aims to complement the James Webb Space Telescope by focusing on the far-infrared spectrum. NASA has progressed PRIMA into Phase B of development, with a project cap of $1.2 billion and a target launch in 2033.

PRIMA’s science objectives include:

  1. Planetary Atmosphere Formation: Understanding how atmospheres, particularly the presence of water, form around planets.
  2. Co-evolution of Black Holes and Galaxies: Exploring the relationship and development between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies.
  3. Elemental Evolution: Investigating how complex elements in the universe originated beyond the initial hydrogen and helium from the Big Bang.

Pope, the science team lead, emphasizes the importance of involving students in the project. Her lab will develop data analysis tools for PRIMA, providing training and experience for students at various levels as the mission progresses. The project not only promises significant scientific insights but also an opportunity for education and workforce development in the field of astrophysics.
