Abstract

Space robotics often brings to mind iconic Mars rovers and the ISS robotic arm. However, recent advancements have catalyzed a transformation in the applications of robotics in both scientific and national security missions. This presentation will explore novel uses of space robotics, from Earth observation and deep-space astrophysics to planetary exploration.

Key topics include:

  • Terrestrial analog demonstrations (e.g., robots assembling various structures, servicing satellites, and navigating hazardous terrains).
  • The integration of hardware-software co-design, flight autonomy, AI/ML, and high-fidelity modeling.
  • Strategies for scaling these systems and pathways for professionals in the field.

Bio

Dr. Rudranarayan Mukherjee is a distinguished expert in space robotics. He has led significant projects for various organizations, including NASA, NOAA, and DARPA. With nearly twenty years at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Dr. Mukherjee was instrumental in In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM).

His notable achievements include:

  • Work on the Mars Curiosity rover and Lunar Sample Return missions.
  • Leadership in the NASA In-Space Assembled Telescope study.
  • Founding the Space SMART Think Tank to influence US policy on ISAM.

Currently, as Chief Architect at Katalyst Space Technology in Broomfield, CO, he focuses on implementing ISAM flight missions, including spacecraft deorbiting and robotic assembly for power-beaming. Dr. Mukherjee is also an elected member of the ASME Technical Committee on Multibody Dynamics and Nonlinear Systems.
