Poverello Center to Assume Control of Missoula’s Temporary Safe Outdoor Facility

Missoula’s Temporary Safe Outdoor Space Set to Reopen Under New Leadership

MISSOULA — Missoula’s Temporary Safe Outdoor Space (TSOS) will soon reopen, this time under the leadership of the Poverello Center after the closure of Hope Rescue Mission. The program, designed to support individuals transitioning out of homelessness, was previously managed by United Way of Missoula County and Hope Rescue Mission.

Following a two-month hiatus, the TSOS is ready to embark on its next phase, building on existing frameworks established by its predecessors. Jill Bonny, executive director of the Poverello Center, emphasized learning from past operations to enhance the program’s effectiveness.

The Poverello Center is collaborating with Missoula County for operations at TSOS, which is located on county-owned land at Mullan Road and Broadway. Chris Lounsbury, Missoula County’s chief administrative officer, noted improvements including renovated bathroom facilities from the former Johnson Street Shelter.

The TSOS will host regular meetings with case managers and provide numerous resources to residents. Lounsbury highlighted partnerships with entities like the Housing Authority to ensure participants have access to necessary support.

Key Points:

  • Capacity: TSOS can accommodate approximately 35 to 40 individuals.
  • Success Rate: Historically, between 40% and 55% of participants transition into stable housing.
  • Flexible Stay Duration: There is no strict time limit for residents, with potential stays similar to veteran programs, which allow for up to two years based on individual progress.
  • Funding: Missoula County is funding the program for the next two years with an $800,000 agreement, while Poverello Center seeks additional revenue sources.

As the targeted reopening date of November 1 approaches, the Poverello Center is finalizing guidelines to facilitate a supportive environment for those ready to pursue stable housing. For more information, visit the Poverello Center or the Missoula County websites.
