Hurricane Polo has weakened to a strong Category 4 off Mexico’s Pacific coast after achieving Category 5 status earlier this week. This rapid intensification is linked to El Niño, which is currently causing warmer ocean waters and impacting global weather patterns. An analysis from the Climate Impact Lab forecasts nearly half a million heat-related deaths by February due to extreme heat from El Niño. According to Peter Huybers, Chair of Harvard’s Earth and Planetary Sciences, while it’s difficult to predict exact weather events, the likelihood of unusual conditions—like droughts and heavy rainfall—has increased because of El Niño. Correspondent Marybel Gonzalez will discuss the science behind this and what people should prepare for in a segment at 3 PM ET with custom insights from Los Angeles.
