US Considers Fresh Restrictions on Travel to Cuba at the UN as Havana Criticizes Trump’s Economic Pressure

The article discusses potential new travel restrictions on Cuban officials by the Trump administration, coinciding with the upcoming U.N. General Assembly vote on the U.S. economic embargo against Cuba. Despite a sizable Cuban delegation being approved to attend the assembly, U.S. officials are considering strict controls for their return next month.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez criticized these measures, describing them as collective punishment against the Cuban people and highlighting the detrimental effects of the U.S. oil blockade, which has led to severe power outages in Cuba. He expressed Cuba’s willingness to maintain communication channels but noted that current U.S. policies have been aggressive and counterproductive.

Cuban officials already face travel limitations due to U.S. designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, and any new restrictions could hinder their ability to participate in the vote against the embargo, which historically sees strong international condemnation of U.S. policy. The article also touches on U.S. attempts to sway other countries to vote against the resolution, as well as Cuba’s recent economic reforms that aim to open the island to the private sector, though Rodríguez emphasized these are not concessions to the U.S.
