Oregon’s public school assessment results for math, science, and English language arts have shown gradual improvement for the second consecutive year. According to scores released by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) on September 24, proficiency increased by 1.4 percentage points in math, 0.8 in English language arts, and 0.6 in science. Despite this upward trend, the scores remain notably lower than those recorded before the pandemic.
ODE director Charlene Williams expressed cautious optimism, noting the results indicate progress but highlight the need for further improvement. The assessments, mandated for students in grades 3 through 8 and 11, aim to evaluate the effectiveness of Oregon’s educational system. Scores are categorized into four levels, with levels 3 and 4 indicating proficiency.
In a positive development, participation in the assessments increased slightly, with 90% of students taking the tests; however, some districts reported high opt-out rates, which complicates the interpretation of the results and indicates potential challenges in evaluating academic success.
