The Sustainable Bus Award showcases innovative solutions in public transport, with hybrid coaches emerging as a practical transitional option towards full electric vehicles. Scania’s Irizar i6S Efficient PHEV won the 2027 coach prize by demonstrating a plug-in hybrid system that can reduce long-distance fuel consumption by up to 47%.
Judges acknowledged its capability to operate on electricity alone in urban environments and zero-emission zones, ensuring longevity on longer routes. This approach is seen as a viable interim solution until public charging infrastructure becomes more robust.
The coach features a powerful 460hp 13-litre Super engine, two 145kW electric motors, and an 89kWh lithium-ion battery. It offers an electric-only range of 70 km for the tri-axle version and 80 km for the two-axle variant, with a quick charge from 20% to 80% taking about 45 minutes.
Anders Liss, Scania’s Global Head of Business Solutions for People Transport Solutions, emphasized the need for adaptable solutions in long-distance coach operations. The hybrid system enhances fuel efficiency while allowing for the integration of renewable fuels, further minimizing CO₂ emissions.
