Akio Toyoda Inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame
Detroit, Sept. 24, 2026 — Akio Toyoda, chairman of the board at Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), was honored with induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame last night in Detroit for his significant contributions to the global automotive industry.
This prestigious recognition celebrates leaders and innovators whose work has played a pivotal role in shaping modern mobility.
In his acceptance speech, Toyoda expressed gratitude, saying, “Like my grandfather and father before me, I am deeply moved by this honor, and I humbly promise to continue to earn it every day in support of this industry and this automotive family that I am so grateful to be a part of. Together, there is nothing we can’t imagine, nothing we can’t create, and nothing we can’t overcome.”
Toyoda has been president of TMC since 2009, stepping into a leadership role during a challenging period for the company. He implemented quality control enhancements and rebuilt trust in the Toyota brand. Toyoda’s efforts have focused on “making ever-better cars” by fostering a management philosophy that prioritizes customer feedback.
A master driver, Toyoda emphasized motorsports as a testing ground for both vehicles and team development, encouraging a culture of innovation and hands-on problem-solving through a “go and see” approach.
Notably, he is the fourth member of the Toyoda family to be inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, joining his grandfather, Kiichiro; father, Shoichiro; and cousin, Eiji Toyoda.

The Automotive Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization that honors individuals whose achievements have significantly influenced the automotive and mobility industry. Established initially as Automobile Old Timers in 1939, the organization has recognized nearly 800 individuals, with over 300 receiving its highest honor—induction into the Hall of Fame.
