Understanding Pet Hunger and Food Insecurity
Food insecurity affects millions in the U.S., impacting not just humans but also their pets. With nearly 48 million people facing food insecurity, about 30 million pets live in homes where this issue is prevalent. Despite the seriousness of pet hunger, awareness is shockingly low—only 31% of people recognize the existence of pet hunger at home.
The Impossible Choice Faced by Pet Owners
Many pet owners view their animals as family members and prioritize their pets’ needs even over their own. Alarmingly, one in five seniors reportedly forgo their own meals to ensure their pets are fed. Some distributions of Meals on Wheels have shown that food intended for seniors is often shared with their pets instead.
The situation can lead to difficult decisions: 56% of pet parents have cut costs elsewhere to afford pet food, and 13% have contemplated rehoming their pets when finances become overwhelming.
Solutions and Support
Community support can make a substantial difference. A staggering 87% of pet owners who struggle to afford pet food prioritize having pet food available at local food banks. This has prompted organizations like PetSmart Charities to partner with Feeding America and Meals on Wheels America to provide pet food assistance year-round, distributing hundreds of millions of meals to pets in need.
Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities, emphasizes that concern for pets should not be dictated by financial status, advocating for societal support systems to include pets in their assistance programs.
If you’re in need, many resources are available. Visit the Meals on Wheels or Feeding America websites for information on accessing food support for both you and your pet.
