UAFS Advances in Establishing a Respiratory Therapy Program

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (UAFS) is progressing toward offering an Associate of Applied Science degree in respiratory therapy, anticipating coursework to begin in fall 2027. Recently, UAFS received approval for its letter of intent from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) and the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees. They plan to enroll an initial group of 12 students.

Cheryl Earls, the executive director of respiratory therapy at UAFS, expressed enthusiasm for the program, highlighting that construction has started on the dedicated lab space, funded by a nearly $3 million donation from the Windgate Foundation. This lab will be part of the upcoming Center for Health Innovation, projected to cost at least $30 million.

Earls emphasized the community’s need for trained respiratory therapists, noting that many are nearing retirement and current staff often work overtime. The program aims to train therapists who will remain in the Fort Smith area. Collaborations with local healthcare providers for clinical training are already established, ensuring practical experience for students.

According to various hiring websites, respiratory therapists in the Fort Smith metro area earn between $50,000 and $75,000. Earls highlighted the importance of stable career opportunities in healthcare, particularly for young people in the region.
