Joe Lycett is stepping into the spotlight as a contestant on the latest season of Celebrity Traitors, and he’s ready to challenge the perceptions that often pigeonhole him as the “gay comedian off the telly.” In a recent interview, the 38-year-old comedian expressed his desire to show his more composed side, distinct from his on-stage persona.
A New Perspective
“I definitely come across assumptions of ‘oh, he’s the gay comedian off the telly’,” Lycett shared, noting that many viewers might be surprised to learn about his life outside the comedy circuit, including his relationship with his female partner and their child together. Lycett identifies as pansexual, which adds further depth to his identity beyond public assumptions.
“When I’m not out on stage, I’m very calm, thoughtful, and peaceful,” he emphasized. Despite his laid-back demeanor, he anticipates that some contestants may misinterpret his reserved nature as suspicious, particularly those unfamiliar with him outside of “show mode.”

The Game and Its Challenges
Lycett acknowledges that the contrast between his stage and off-stage personality could be both an asset and a liability in the game. He reflected on how he’s evolved over the years: “When I started doing stand-up, my on- and off-stage persona were quite similar… gradually, as I got that attention through doing stand-up, I could calm down in real life.”
Celebrity Traitors premieres on **October 1 at 8 PM on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Contestants will compete for a cash prize pot of up to £100,000 for charity. Lycett joins a diverse cast, including fellow queer members like Bella Ramsey and Sebastian Croft.
Commitment to Fitness and Family
In addition to his stand-up career, Lycett has been focusing on fitness and well-being, jokingly claiming, “I’m as strong as an ox. Fierce as well. As fierce as a tiger.” His commitment to improving his health reflects his dedication to being a better father and individual.
Lycett’s participation in Celebrity Traitors is not just another gig; it’s a chance for him to redefine public perceptions and share a deeper aspect of his life. As he prepares for the game ahead, fans eagerly await to see how this beloved comedian integrates his authenticity into this competitive landscape.
