The U.S. military has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it has weapons deployed in orbit. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink made the statement directly: “The United States now has on-orbit space control weapons.” Security experts say the announcement does not change what is physically in space — but it does change what the United States is willing to admit.
“Fundamentally, the technology and anything in orbit didn’t change this week,” said Dr. Jessica West, a senior researcher at Project Ploughshares and space security expert. “What changed is acknowledgement.”
