Denver’s Globeville Community Member Sustains Ongoing Fight for Green Space

Joseph Herrera, a resident of Denver’s Globeville neighborhood, has long been advocating for a lot near Interstate 70 and Washington Street that has remained vacant for decades. According to Herrera, the dust from this lot blows into nearby homes, making it difficult for residents to keep their houses clean or even open their windows.

After extensive efforts, Herrera discovered that the property was owned by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). He managed to urge CDOT to maintain the property and eventually got the city of Denver to purchase it for $30,000 earlier this year. Herrera wants the land transformed into green space, which he believes would help combat pollution in the area.

Despite initial indications from Denver officials that they would honor the community’s desire for green space, Herrera suspects that the city may be looking to sell the land instead. When inquired about the lot, city officials pointed out the challenges associated with it, without directly addressing plans for its future.

Frustrated but committed to his community, Herrera has decided to run for city council to better represent District 9.
