Washington, Ill. has taken a step toward enhancing its economic development by approving a new business development district. The city council unanimously voted to establish this district, which will start on January 1, 2027.
Key Details:
- Sales Tax: A 0.25% sales tax will be implemented on eligible merchandise within the district. Notably, food, drugs, and titled items will be exempt from this tax.
- Revenue Generation: The tax is projected to generate over $700,000 annually. This revenue will be allocated to various economic development and infrastructure initiatives, such as revitalizing vacant properties, attracting new businesses, and supporting existing businesses.
- Tax Concerns: Some council members expressed the need to balance this new tax with potential reductions in other taxes. Both Ward III’s Bobby Martin and Ward IV’s Michael McIntyre voiced support for lowering the sales tax rate or reducing property taxes as part of this initiative.
- Next Steps: City Administrator Jeff Fiegenschuh mentioned that more financial data will be available in the coming month to better assess how the property tax could be adjusted.
This strategic move aims to bolster the local economy while also addressing concerns about tax burdens on residents.
