Storm Update: Typhoon Dujuan
Published On: 22 Sep 2026
A powerful storm, Typhoon Dujuan, is currently moving northeast across the Pacific, near Japan’s eastern coast. The typhoon has led to evacuation advisories for over 1.6 million residents, with significant travel disruptions, flooding, and landslides reported, especially in the Tokyo region.
As of Monday, Dujuan had wind speeds of about 144 km/h (89 mph) and made landfall approximately 130 km (80 miles) south of Katsuura. Thousands have lost power due to the severe conditions, and tragically, two fatalities have been confirmed.
Current Status
- Movement: By early Tuesday, the storm had shifted away from the coastline and was heading towards the Aleutian Islands with slightly reduced wind strength, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
- Risks: Areas under warnings face continued rainfall as the typhoon progresses to the north. The JMA anticipates that total rainfall could exceed monthly averages for September, risking record-breaking levels.
Impact on Daily Life
- Travel Disruptions: Many travelers have been stranded as airlines, including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, canceled 135 and 140 flights, respectively. Additionally, several rail services—including bullet trains connecting Tokyo with Osaka—were suspended.
- Local Conditions: Social media has shown images of significant flooding, particularly around Kamakura station, a popular tourist destination. Floodwaters have also affected Ichikawa, east of Tokyo.
- Event Cancellations: The early closure of the Tokyo Game Show, a major video game trade fair, occurred on its final day, along with the cancellation of a major music festival and a baseball game in Chiba.
As Dujuan marks Japan’s 25th typhoon this year, the country is reminded of its frequent encounters with severe storms during late summer and early autumn. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation evolves.
