Rome Waterfront Revitalization Project Moves Forward
ROME, N.Y. — The Rome waterfront revitalization project is progressing as city officials reviewed new proposals during a recent meeting. Key ideas include a new entertainment venue at the former Cayo Industries haunted house site on Railroad Street, plans for residential and commercial space on Mill Street, and enhancements to Bellamy Harbor Park.
Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan emphasized the importance of community feedback during the discussions. “We appreciate the continued input. Anything that anyone would like to see today or via the website, just reach out and let us know. This really is a community project—everyone should come together and express what they want to see,” he stated.
Open House Planned
Next steps involve a public open house where residents can review all proposals. Specific details about the event will be shared on the project’s website.
Update on Staley Elementary School
In addition to the waterfront project, Mayor Lanigan provided an update on the status of Staley Elementary School, which has remained closed since 2021 due to flooding from Tropical Storm Fred. The district indicated last month that FEMA funds could not be allocated for demolition of the school. However, after clarification from FEMA, it was confirmed that such funding is indeed permissible to support the demolition, permitting future developments at the site.
A proposal for repurposing the Staley School site was also presented at the waterfront meeting; responses from the school district are pending.
