Mobile City Council is considering an expansion of downtown’s Entertainment District to include the new Regions Arena, aimed at enhancing accessibility for major events and increasing visitor traffic. This proposal comes as the city readies for the arena’s inaugural concert featuring The Red Clay Strays on March 26, 2027.
Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis emphasized that integrating the arena into the entertainment district has been a long-term goal, allowing patrons to enjoy drinks and dine on Dauphin Street before walking to events without hassle.
Under current regulations, patrons can carry a single alcoholic drink from licensed businesses within the district, provided it’s in a branded container of 16 ounces or less. However, different establishments need specific licenses to sell drinks to go.
Fred Rendfrey, president of the Downtown Mobile Alliance, noted the expansion aims to establish a safer route connecting downtown businesses and the arena, creating a lively atmosphere for various events. He acknowledged the challenges of managing a larger entertainment district but expressed confidence in collaborative efforts to ensure a positive experience.
The council is set to discuss the proposal on Tuesday, along with considerations for a juvenile curfew in downtown. The city continues to assess safety measures for upcoming events, ensuring visitors can enjoy a secure and enjoyable environment.
