NASA launched its State Hubs for Skilled Technical Workforce initiative on September 15, 2026, at Space Center Houston. The goal is to enhance the space economy by forming partnerships and focusing on small businesses to improve the technical workforce.
Elaine Ho, associate administrator for NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, emphasized the initiative’s importance, highlighting efforts to plan actionable programs that lead students into lucrative technical jobs.
The meeting in Houston allowed project leaders and partners to discuss workforce needs and best practices. NASA selected seven states—California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, Texas, and Utah—each to tailor programs for their local aerospace industries.
Challenges identified included the need for better coordination among education, industry, and economic development, as well as addressing misconceptions about manufacturing roles.
In the coming months, awardees will develop and launch programs to equip students with the skills needed for a career in aerospace, paving the way for a workforce ready to support NASA’s missions and U.S. leadership in space.
