Aperture’s New Location Demonstrates the Organization’s Dedication to ‘An Inclusive Medium’ – The Art Newspaper

Aperture, the non-profit publisher dedicated to photography, reopened on September 18 at its new permanent location on New York’s Upper West Side. This 10,000-sq.-ft. space features a street-facing bookstore, gallery space for exhibitions, and staff offices, enhancing its visibility. Executive Director Sarah Meister highlighted a shift in audience engagement, noting the opportunity to connect with both serious photographers and casual visitors.

Founded in 1952 by notable photographers including Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange, Aperture began as a quarterly publication and has since evolved to publish over 1,000 photography books. After relocating several times, they recently purchased their new space, funded by a $25 million capital campaign.

For its inaugural exhibition, Aperture Loves New York, running until November 1, Meister selected 24 influential photographers whose work engages with the city, showcasing their prints alongside relevant Aperture publications. The gallery aims to feel welcoming and accessible, avoiding a museum-like atmosphere, and will host public events, including discussions with featured photographers.

Aperture’s bookstore will carry new titles and a curated selection from independent publishers, reflecting its commitment to making photography accessible to a broad audience.
