MLB teams draw in fans with themed pop culture events.

The Toronto Blue Jays hosted a “Hello Kitty” day during a game against the Baltimore Orioles, showcasing how MLB teams use pop culture themes to attract new audiences. The first 15,000 fans received exclusive Hello Kitty bobbleheads, and activities like face painting and friendship bracelet-making were available at the stadium.

According to MLB, such theme nights help bring in women and children, with recent events showing that a significant portion of attendees, 56%, were first-time buyers and 45% were women. The Blue Jays’ previous “Barbie” theme day saw a 40% spike in ticket sales.

Pop culture themes are proving effective across MLB, leading to a 38% growth last season and a 13% increase in ticket sales from special promotions. Other sports leagues are also adopting similar events, with experts noting that while they can fill seats, there isn’t definitive data supporting lasting fan loyalty from these promotions.
