In March 2025, a live baby colossal squid was captured on video in its natural environment, measuring around a foot in length and floating at a depth of 1,968 feet near the South Sandwich Islands. This species had been identified a century prior based on two arm crowns found in the stomach of a sperm whale.

The Colossal Squid: A Century of Mystery

For a hundred years after its scientific description, the colossal squid remained elusive in its natural habitat. Named Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni in 1925, it was mostly known through remains found in other animals, rather than through direct observation. That changed dramatically on March 9, 2025, when footage of a juvenile colossal squid, about 30 centimeters long, was captured at a depth of 600 meters near the South Sandwich Islands.

Historical Context

The species was described from two arm crowns found in a sperm whale’s stomach. Since then, only nine specimens larger than juveniles have been reported. While some complete specimens were eventually recovered, most knowledge came from beaks and partially digested remains.

The Historic Footage

Captured by the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian during a mission by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, the sighting marked a significant milestone in marine biology. Experts confirmed the squid’s identity based on distinctive anatomical features, such as the unique hooks on its arms.

The Challenges of Observing Colossal Squid

The main reasons for the century-long gap in observations include their habitat—deep and cold waters of the Southern Ocean—and the squid’s likely aversion to bright lights and noise from research equipment.

Significance of the Discovery

While the footage doesn’t provide answers to fundamental questions about the squid’s hunting or mating behaviors, it shifts the narrative from studying remains to observing a living specimen in its habitat. As Chief Scientist Michelle Taylor noted, the sighting is rare and highlights the unexplored mysteries of our own planet, prompting a renewed interest in deep-sea exploration.
