NASA gives SpaceX $946 million for three additional crewed missions to the ISS.

SpaceX has secured a contract extension with NASA to continue launching astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) for at least four more years, with funding of $946 million for three additional crewed missions. This extends their Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contract, bringing total missions for SpaceX to 17.

SpaceX has successfully operated with its Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule, launching astronauts since May 2020. The company is currently on its 12th mission and preparing for the 13th, expected in early October, with the contract’s total value now reaching $5.92 billion.

Boeing, SpaceX’s commercial partner, has faced more challenges with its Starliner capsule, which encountered issues during its first crewed test mission in June 2024. Although Starliner is still part of NASA’s plan for crewed flights, it remains uncertified for operational missions, and the timeline for its next flight is uncertain.

NASA is planning to retire the ISS by late 2030 or early 2031, but it aims to establish commercial space stations that will continue to support crewed missions in low Earth orbit. SpaceX anticipates retiring the Crew Dragon capsule around 2030, shifting its focus to the development of its fully reusable Starship megarocket.
