London Science Museum Ends Partnership with BP Following Years of Activism

The London Science Museum has officially severed its sponsorship agreements with BP, Shell, and Equinor. This decision follows extensive advocacy from activists, educators, and scientists criticizing the museum’s long-standing ties with these fossil fuel companies. For over 25 years, BP was a key sponsor, despite the company’s controversial history, including a notorious oil spill and noted legal strategies.

The museum is now getting rid of its associations with these firms in light of the serious climate challenges the world currently faces. This change comes amid heightened scrutiny of how corporate partnerships may influence an institution’s credibility on critical issues like climate change. Consequently, the museum has faced accusations of greenwashing, particularly due to contracts that restricted its ability to criticize sponsors.

While distancing itself from major fossil fuel companies, the museum will continue its sponsorship agreement with Adani Green Energy, which has also sparked backlash due to the Adani Group’s involvement in coal mining and other controversies.

Critics, including former museum advisors and over 40 senior academics, have emphasized the importance of prioritizing ethical partnerships that align with climate action and sustainability.
