Clyfford Still Museum Expands to Combat Loneliness
In an innovative response to the increasing epidemic of loneliness, the Clyfford Still Museum is transforming the former Cap City Tavern building at 1247 Bannock St. into a welcoming multi-use space intended for gatherings and cross-disciplinary programs aimed at all ages.
Strategic Acquisition
The museum purchased the brick structure in 2018, while the tavern continued to operate until its closing in July 2025. Renovations are planned under the guidance of Maria Cole from Studio Cole.
Brief History
Clyfford Still, an influential pioneer of Abstract painting, stipulated that his artworks be housed in a dedicated museum. The Clyfford Still Museum opened in November 2011 and is notable for innovative community offerings, including meditation classes.
CSM director Joyce Tsai emphasized that the new space will allow for expanded programming to meet community interest. “We will experiment, pilot and scale programs,” she stated, aiming to deepen community ties.
Community Impact
The space aims to continue the legacy of Cap City Tavern as a gathering spot, playing a vital role in Denver’s Golden Triangle Creative District. With this move, Anna Boatwright, the museum’s deputy director, reaffirmed CSM’s commitment to the neighborhood, stating they envision a vibrant communal hub.
Future Offerings
Event capabilities will be enhanced with new offerings, accommodating larger audiences. Boatwright noted that while the main museum can host 70 people, the new space will cater for 90 in lectures and up to 200 for receptions.
Exciting Prospects
Boatwright expects the new building will provide a vital space for community interaction and creativity, enlivening the block and contributing to a more vibrant downtown Denver.
The Clyfford Still Museum houses an impressive collection of the artist’s work, making it a cornerstone for cultural engagement and artistic appreciation in the city.
