McLaren Automotive has embarked on a significant £500 million investment initiative aimed at enhancing its manufacturing and engineering capabilities in the U.K. This program, backed by the Abu Dhabi sovereign investment entity L’IMAD, aims to boost vehicle production, particularly with the introduction of a new performance SUV.
Key highlights of the investment include:
-
Expansion of Production Facilities: A new vehicle assembly facility will facilitate increased output and ensure next-generation McLaren cars are produced domestically.
-
In-House Powertrain Development: For the first time, McLaren will design and manufacture its own engines and transmissions, supporting its hybrid technology strategy that originated with the McLaren P1.
-
Job Creation: The initiative is expected to generate over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in the U.K. by 2032 while doubling the current production workforce.
-
Research and Innovation: The investment will enhance McLaren’s expertise in lightweight materials and advanced manufacturing processes, safeguarding critical intellectual property in the U.K.
-
Integrated U.K. Operations: Recent openings include a design and innovation center and a vehicle testing facility, further solidifying McLaren’s integrated approach to production.
CEO Nick Collins emphasized that this platform will help the company grow and maintain its competitive edge in the automotive market for years to come.
