Four Generations of Family Preserve the Sweetness of Their Chocolate Business

Snowflake Chocolates: A Sweet Legacy in Jericho, Vermont

JERICHO, Vt. — At Snowflake Chocolates, the Pollack family is busy preparing their next delicious batch of homemade confections, a tradition that has been thriving for 40 years. Inspired by Snowflake Bentley, the first person to photograph snowflakes, Martha Pollack named the business to celebrate this unique artistry.

The family-run operation is a colorful mix of personalities, with four generations working together. Patriarch Bob Pollack, at 86 years old, works tirelessly—up to 60 hours a week during peak seasons—side by side with his grandson Alex, who started helping out at just five years old.

While working with family can sometimes lead to playful tensions, the Pollacks maintain that their commitment to one another and to the business is what keeps them going. As the youngest daughter, Shelly, candidly expresses, “We’re very good at arguing with each other… but at the end of the day, you’re still family.”

Bob, who learned to make candy from his father, initially pursued a career in banking before returning to his passion in confectionery. He notes the freedom he now has to express himself compared to his previous profession.

The Pollacks’ dedication to their craft and family shines through, with each member sharing their deep appreciation for this sweet legacy. “I’m very happy to have them all here,” Martha said, reflecting on the joy their business brings.

In their own words, the Pollacks have the key ingredients for success—family, passion, and a love for chocolate. As Bob simply puts it, “Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.”

For those looking to experience their unique flavors, Snowflake Chocolates also operates a retail shop in South Burlington, ensuring that their treats continue to bring joy to many.
