Life Sciences Facility Unveils Amid Donor Dispute – The Wesleyan Argus

The Casper Life Sciences Building at Wesleyan University officially opened on September 8, after seven years of development. Spanning 197,300 square feet and featuring advanced labs, classrooms, and study areas, the facility was built with a budget of $250 million and is intended to enhance the University’s science programs.

Replacing the aging Hall-Atwater building, which has been criticized for its inadequate facilities and has faced issues like air-conditioning problems and even a fire, the new building emphasizes energy efficiency, collaboration, and an inviting atmosphere. It houses four science departments and includes features like an automated lighting system and separate airflow for labs.

The project was notably supported by a $25 million donation from Marc Casper ’90 P’23, CEO of Thermo Fisher Scientific, which has faced controversies related to its business practices in China. Despite the positive reception of the facility, concerns regarding Casper’s association with these controversies linger, as student petitions have arisen calling for his removal from the Board of Trustees.

The building aims to foster a sense of community and engagement among students in scientific research, coinciding with an increase in STEM major enrollments at the University. Guided tours for families and students will be offered during Homecoming + Family Weekend.
