Alert to Pet Owners: Beware of Scammers Exploiting Missing Pets
VICTORIA, Texas — As one local family intensifies its search for their missing dog, Victoria Police are warning pet owners about a new wave of scammers targeting those who are desperately trying to reunite with lost animals.
The family of a dog named Lucky has begun an extensive search after he went missing. They have shared information and photos on social media and distributed 40 flyers in their local area, offering a reward for his safe return. The owner expressed how much they miss Lucky: “We just want him back. Our house isn’t a home without him.”
As they canvass their neighborhood, the family has received support from neighbors who have promised to keep an eye out for Lucky. Despite their diligent efforts, the police have advised that their actions could attract fraudulent schemes from scammers who monitor missing pet posts online.
These scammers often leverage the shared information and images to create plausible scams. In some cases, they even employ artificial intelligence to fabricate convincing stories about the pet being found. Scammers might claim the animal is injured or at a veterinary clinic and press the owner for immediate payments for emergency care, oftentimes via untraceable methods like gift cards or cryptocurrency.
Victoria Police highlight that these schemes operate through emotional manipulation, preying on a pet owner’s urgency and fear. To avoid falling victim, pet owners should:
- Be wary of unexpected requests for money. Especially those insisting on gift cards or cryptocurrency.
- Verify identities. If someone claims to have found the pet, contact them through a trustworthy phone number instead of the one they provide.
- Ask for real-time proof. Request recent photos or videos of the animal before considering any payment, and reach out directly to veterinary offices or the police using independently sourced contact numbers.
Despite these warnings, police acknowledge that social media remains a valuable tool for finding lost pets. The essential strategy is to stay vigilant about verifying claims and being cautious with respondents to posts.
