Iowa City Skate Park Initiative

Luke Ferguson and Molly Enochson are launching free skateboarding “open gyms” at the Iowa City Skate Park, called ‘Sunday Fun-Days’. This initiative provides skaters of all levels, including beginners, the opportunity to practice on free boards and pads.

Teaching New Skaters

Local middle schooler Hudson Mangan, 11, expresses excitement about learning the ollie, a foundational skateboarding trick. Ferguson, a longtime skater with 30 years of experience, finds joy in teaching others, recalling his own early experiences of helping newcomers.

Plans for a Nonprofit

Ferguson and Enochson aim to establish a nonprofit organization to create an indoor community space in Iowa City. This space will serve not just skaters, but also artists, musicians, and athletes, fostering a welcoming environment for various activities. They are currently raising funds through a GoFundMe to support their mission, hoping to file for nonprofit status soon.

Building Community

While the nonprofit is still in the planning stages, Ferguson envisions it as a hub for creativity and connection. He believes that engaging the community through skating, art, and music can help foster a sense of togetherness, moving beyond online disputes to build real, meaningful experiences.
