Touchdowns and Turkey Tacos: Colorado’s DeAndre Moore Jr. Channels NIL Earnings into Food Truck Business

DeAndre Moore Jr. Embraces Entrepreneurship with Food Truck and Tesla Rentals

By PAT GRAHAM

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — For receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., scoring touchdowns and serving turkey tacos go hand in hand.

Moore has capitalized on his name, image, and likeness (NIL) earnings to launch a food truck called “Jive Turkey,” offering a turkey-themed menu ranging from burgers to deep-fried tacos. He’s also exploring a Tesla rental business.

“I’m an entrepreneur,” said Moore, who joined the Colorado Buffaloes this year after three seasons at the University of Texas. “I want to invest in things that provide returns instead of spending on jewelry and clothes. I need my money to last.”

Tasty Ventures

Moore’s venture is a family affair. His twin sister, Denae, manages finances, while their mother, Taleea, curates the menu. The inspiration for their turkey-based dishes came from a health-conscious family decision to replace most proteins with turkey, including a notable cornbread bowl featuring mashed potatoes, turkey, macaroni and cheese, and gravy.

The food truck is currently operating in Austin, Texas, but plans to relocate to Boulder, with aspirations of opening a restaurant. Meanwhile, the Tesla rental initiative is slowly taking shape under Denae’s guidance.

“My family taught me the value of money,” said Moore, who aims to help his team secure its third win this Saturday against Northwestern. “We’re going to make some money.”

Despite critiques of the NIL landscape focusing on financial gain over education, Moore exemplifies the potential for athletes to build substantial futures.

Aiming for the NFL

Moore’s ultimate ambition is to play in the NFL after hitting impressive stats at Texas, including 77 receptions for 988 yards and 11 touchdowns. He sought a fresh start at Colorado, drawn by offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, who had previously recruited him.

“From day one, we just clicked,” Marion said. “It’s not just him; it’s his entire family. I’m thrilled to have him here.”

With Colorado implementing Marion’s fast-paced “Go-Go” offense, Moore fits right in. “It’s extremely receiver-friendly—like basketball on grass,” he noted.

In a recent game, Moore showcased his capabilities with a 66-yard touchdown pass, finishing with four receptions for 107 yards.

“Not only does he enhance our offense, but he’s an exemplary young man,” said head coach Deion Sanders. “He’s punctual, respectful, and has a genuine love for the game.”

Focus and Growth

A pivotal moment for Moore was an early morning weight training session, where assistant coach Jeremy Cole handed him an hourglass, prompting him to reflect on how he utilizes his time. This led him to be more intentional in his daily life.

Over the summer, Sanders invited Moore and other players to a leadership retreat designed to instill valuable life and business lessons.

“It was incredible to hear Coach Prime’s journey and how he surrounds himself with the right people to succeed,” Moore shared.

As Moore continues to navigate college sports and his entrepreneurial ventures, he represents a new wave of athletes who are successfully balancing their passions on and off the field.
