Study Reveals US Sanctions Propel China’s Science-Driven Innovation by More than 70%

Sanctioned Chinese companies are increasingly utilizing open-source research to innovate and reverse-engineer foreign technology, experiencing a notable 72% increase in scientific literature citations within their patent applications. This trend has emerged as the United States expanded its Entity List, aimed at protecting national security and maintaining technological superiority. An analysis of Chinese patent filings from the past 12 years suggests that these US restrictions have prompted Chinese firms to rely more on publicly available scientific knowledge and increase their own research efforts.

Researchers noted that while US trade sanctions may hinder the short-term operations of these firms, they could inadvertently foster the development of internal capabilities and strategic shifts. This, in turn, could lead to the establishment of independent technological systems that might compete against, rather than integrate with, the existing global innovation framework. This insight was shared in a recent policy article published in the journal Science.
