BLACKWOOD: An Ambitious Episodic Game Experience
The gaming landscape has been wary of episodic releases, often marred by studios failing to deliver promised content. However, AttritoM7 Productions, creators of the tactical shooter Zero Hour, aim to restore faith in this format with their new title, BLACKWOOD. Players can buy the game once and receive Acts 2 and 3 for free upon release.
Setting & Gameplay
Set in 2012 New York, BLACKWOOD follows Anton Blackwood, who leads a double life as a DVD store manager by day and a contract killer by night. The game emphasizes preparation and the weight of player choices over fast-paced action, reflecting the tension seen in classic crime thrillers. Anton’s management of the DVD store adds a compelling layer to the gameplay, providing context for his nighttime activities.
Developed using Unity 6 HDRP, it boasts a soundtrack created by the development team, indicating a level of ambition beyond its price tag.
Content & Pricing Structure
Act 1 offers over six hours of gameplay through four main missions, complemented by side missions and collectibles. Players engaged in managing the store can expect a deeper experience beyond the initial hour count.
The entire story will unfold across three acts, with Act 2 slated for March and Act 3 for September 2027. Early adopters pay a base price of $24.99 now, with future prices set to increase. A $5 Supporter Edition is also available, providing additional content.
Distribution
IZilla Games, experienced in indie game marketing, is handling the game’s release. BLACKWOOD: Act 1 is currently available on Steam, with plans for continuous content updates leading up to the narrative’s conclusion in 2027.
