Dallas ISD and DART Launch Hands-On Training Program for Aspiring Automotive Technicians
Dallas ISD has partnered with Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) to create a new opportunity for high school students interested in automotive careers. The High School Student Bus Maintenance Externship Program is a unique initiative designed to connect students from Dallas ISD’s Automotive Technician Program of Study with experienced bus maintenance professionals.
Program Highlights
- Practical Experience: Students will gain hands-on training in various automotive skills including multipoint vehicle inspections, engine fundamentals, and interior climate-system maintenance.
- Skills Development: Participants will enhance their technical knowledge, workplace experience, and leadership skills, preparing them for in-demand careers in the automotive field.
- Industry Connection: By working closely with DART professionals, students can learn directly from industry experts, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application.
Support for Education and Workforce
Oswaldo Alvarenga, Deputy Chief of Strategic Initiatives for Dallas ISD, emphasized the importance of real-world problem-solving for student growth. “Partnering with DART is a meaningful way to support the next generation of skilled technicians,” he stated. Trenise Winters, DART Chief Operations Officer, also highlighted the significance of cultivating new talent in diesel maintenance, addressing an ongoing shortage in the field.
This joint effort aims to expand career opportunities for students and contribute to a skilled workforce in the Dallas area.
