ABC’s ‘American Idol’ Departs Los Angeles, Dealing Another Setback to the Industry

The long-running reality show “American Idol” is moving its production from Los Angeles to the Atlanta area after 25 years. This shift reflects a broader trend in the industry, as Los Angeles faces declining production levels, with reality TV shoots down 27% in the second quarter over the past year. The move comes amidst concerns from film workers and officials about the local production crisis.

The appeal of Georgia’s generous tax incentives—up to 30% for productions spending at least $500,000—has attracted multiple shows, including “The Masked Singer,” which is relocating to New Jersey for similar reasons. Over the last five years, reality productions in the L.A. area have dropped nearly 63%.

ABC has confirmed the show’s return for its 10th season, with auditions currently taking place in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Ryan Seacrest continues hosting, with celebrity judges including Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood. As more productions seek cost-effective locations, even game shows are moving overseas to take advantage of tax credits.
