Clemson Invested Heavily in Jet Travel and VIP Concert Benefits Prior to President’s Withdrawal

The investigation by FOX Carolina highlights significant spending by Clemson University in the search for its new president, Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz, who ultimately declined the position. The university spent over $19,250 on private jet travel for Guskiewicz and his family during his campus visit, raising questions about the inclusion of non-family members, including his son and his son’s girlfriend.

Clemson defended the travel as standard practice for presidential transitions, stating no extra costs were incurred, and emphasized support for Guskiewicz’s family’s involvement. However, concerns were raised about potential discussions regarding employment for Guskiewicz’s son, given his background in athletics at institutions where his father worked.

Also at play was the use of Clemson’s presidential suite for Guskiewicz’s family during a concert, which occurred shortly before he withdrew from consideration for the position.

Following Guskiewicz’s withdrawal, Clemson abruptly shifted to appoint Dr. Benjamin Ayers, who had not been publicly named as a finalist earlier in the process. Clemson claimed Ayers had been part of the search from the beginning but had stepped back before final decisions were made.

The use of private donations for these expenses was noted, with Clemson asserting compliance with legal standards in the search process and in communications with candidates. However, the situation invites scrutiny regarding transparency and the recruitment’s integrity.
