US Acknowledges Possession of Weapons in Outer Space

The U.S. Space Force has confirmed, for the first time, that the United States has weapons deployed in space. A spokesperson stated that these capabilities allow for “on-orbit space control” to defend against adversaries. The specifics of these weapons were not disclosed, but the statement emphasized both defensive and offensive uses.

U.S. military officials justified this deployment, citing threats from Russia and China, who are perceived as military competitors in space. These nations are reportedly advancing their own space and counterspace capabilities.

China has responded by urging the U.S. to cease military preparations in outer space, warning of a potential arms race. The militarization of space dates back to the Cold War era, with treaties like the 1967 Outer Space Treaty aimed at preventing nuclear weapon deployment in space. However, military activities in space continue to evolve, with nations increasingly targeting each other’s satellites crucial for military functions.
