Hispanic Heritage Month has begun in the United States, celebrating Hispanic and Latino culture. In Arkansas, Hispanics account for about 10% of the population, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. El Centro Hispano in Jonesboro emphasizes the importance of this celebration in showcasing the diversity within the Hispanic community.
Gustavo Ambriz from El Centro Hispano highlighted that the observance fosters a change in community perspectives, promoting support among members. The organization’s role is crucial, especially in helping newcomers navigate barriers like language and integration.
Nationally, Hispanics represent the largest minority group in the U.S., making up about 20% of the population. Arkansas has seen significant growth in its Hispanic community, increasing from nearly 20,000 in 1990 to over 250,000 by 2020. Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15 to coincide with the independence celebrations of several Central American countries.
